From the look of the pics the water neck is still hooked up. Stick the muffs on and hook up the hose.

If there was enough corrosion to freeze the splines, I would assume the bearing(s) are toast, pull the eng and spin the shaft by hand.

That makes sense. Yes, i do see the hose connected to the lower. I will do this and post back with results. Thanks.

The shaft spins good with no play at all. Bearing sound dry, but are not chattering or clinking, like they just need grease. Sound like a light scrubbing noise, like the sound of dry bearings. How do I tell how much grease is already in when re-greasing the bearings through the zerk? I dont want to overfill it.

If you can spin the shaft with the eng installed you have a coupler problem.

When those bearings let go they take a lot of expensive parts with them.

I never said that the shaft spins without the engine running. I said it spins while it is running like it is supposed to. Just sounds like dry bearings and no play what so ever

wanna know why those bearings sound all dry and rusty?
cause they ARE.
its your rig, my last post on this.
fix it now, fix it right, go enjoy.
catastrophic bearing failures NEVER take out just the bearings, which now hopefully all that there is damaged.
any excess grease simply falls into the bellows cavity.
thats why the fwd seal is placed lips in.
but its your rig, do as you wish.

I am not trying to upset anybody, just trying to learn my friend. I have been given the part numbers thanks to Don, and was planning on changing the bearings at first, but didn't want to change them if not needed. Thats why so many questions. Once again, I just trying to learn and have learned alot already. Thanks to everybody.

Hey Cap, what do you think?

I'm no expert. But I've learning on this website for a couple of years now from pro's like Don s and Rodbolt. I've learned that boats, especially old boats, give back what you put into them. It's all about preventative maintenance. But first you have bring everything that has been neglected by previous owners back to life.

Thats what I did, and thats what many others who have passed through here have done.
By running the boat in an unknown condition can cause worse problems.

None of us can see the bearings. but here's what we know.

-the ujoint yoke was rusted solidly to the driveshaft.
-You can hear the bearings when the boat is running, you say they sound dry.

Based on those two factors, I would change the bearings. Just my opinion. In the process you'll learn more about your boat and perhaps find some other things that need attention while your at it.

It your boat, it's up to you.:)
