Im re-doing all my seals gaskets etc on Merc Alpha One Gen one, when I opened the upper gear case housing a few minutes ago, I found this broken bearing. I hope I don't have to replace the whole assembly. Need help identifying it. Thanks. 20230616_123221.jpg20230616_123359.jpg20230616_123421.jpg

It may be possible that the upper bearing could be friction welded to the stub shaft. While the housing could be salvaged it takes a set of shimming tools along with a hydraulic press. I repaired many like that before the SEI drives became available If the case was not damaged.
Your best option is either a used rebuilt of a new SEI upper drive shaft housing.
If you have a parts washing machine the lower can be washed out with the rear bearing carrier removed.
If there is fishing line wrapped around the propeller shaft that got into the seals and you have insurance you could make a claim.

This is the part I need. I think it's called an upper roller bearing. Can this be replaced or do I need to buy a whole complete unit?

You can buy the bearing but as outlined above you will need the tools to shim it properly.

Also need to disassemble and wash out the lower as metal shavings will move between them.

The upper bearing was the clicking noise you heard in the running video you posted on your other thread.

As mentioned the quickest plug and play is a SEI gen one drive as basically you are looking at tearing down the entire drive

Thanks for the info. FWIW, that clicking noise was most definitely without a doubt the coupler. The sterndrive was removed before I removed the engine, and still made that clanking noise. So I replaced the coupler and the noise vanished. The coupler was loose because of an out of aligned engine to sterndrive.

Could be but there is no way that bearing u posted pics of wasnt making noise. That was about to grenade. Might just be the camera angle but would check the gear teeth for wear before putting money into it the metal from the bearing went some where in the drive

I think i caught it at the right time. The gears don't look too bad.
