Re: Upper Gear unit Bearing Replacement

i did the brgs. on my drive gear ujoint yoke shaft. my best advise is to get the mercruiser service manual and follow the instructions to the letter. that's pretty much what i did. what i didn't understand while i was in the middle of the project i came here to iboats to ask. the mercuriers s/m instructions were spot on imho. in other words. my repair worked and is now on it's third or so year w/o indecent of that repair.

Just take your time, have everything spotlessly clean, service manual on hand, and ask us if you have questions. No such thing as dumb questions here, but dumb mistakes can be spendy!

200 ft. lbs, per the s/m.

if yer gonna do ujoints, a ujoint press is cool, along with the special ujoint adaptor the the service manual recommends. assuming ya got the small spacer, a torque wrench that'll measure 85 ft. lbs. round abouts, can't remember the exact torque value. it's in the service manual. if ya don't have the small spacer. you'll need a inch pound torque wrench that'll measure rolling torque of 7 in. lbs, round abouts. the service manual will have the spec. my guess is you'll have the spacer.
anyone know a good inexpensive place to buy them?

I ordered all my tools off ebay, spanner, alignment tool, shift cable socket, hinge pin.... got them all for less then 100 bucks.. and they are gonna last longer then 50 years that I plan to use them... or will be gifted to the new owner when I sell off the boat, how nice would that be!

the spanner wrench needed some filing down as it was dip-chromed lol but they all worked like a charm on my 1st DIY here :)

I mean unless your a shop do you really need a mercruiser stamped tool? :)
