upper shift cable replacement

I have a 1977 sea ray with a mercruser pre alpha 1 with a ford motor. I am replacing the shift cable that goes from the motor to the shift handle. my question is how do I get the pin that holds the cable on the handle end. the cable I am talking about has a loop on the handle end. I need to get the pin that goes through the loop out with out damaging anything.

may have to split the control box

The pin is secured by a tiny SS cotter pin.
