Upper shift shaft upgrade bushings?

I am changing the shift shaft bushings in My #1 drive. As it is the older style with the small bushing and small seal on the bottom of the upper bore. there is a thin seat or register where the old seal went. what happens with this register ridge when You install the new bell shaped bushing into the upper bore?

Did you get the bushing kit or the upgrade kit which has instructions?

Just drive it in. If I remember correctly, there is a slight arc in the housing, so two points of the bushing will be flush, the rest will have a 'gap'.

I got the Quicksilver bell housing bushing kit prt#23-3(or 8)05041A 2. The kit has the large bell shaped bushing with seal installed, and the smaller bushing and yes it does have an instruction sheet,however it does not say any thing about the seat. If I drive the bushing thru the bottom as instructed then it will most likly tear off the thin ridge, which i dont think is a concern just that the thin meatal might get put between the wallof the bushing and the bore. I have read many on the bushing install but not once have i heard mention of this seat that I am refering to?..Hal

Hal, I just did this yesterday on an Alpha one outdrive and I don't know what thin seat you are talking about. Maybe a picture would help.

I used a threaded rod, a socket, nuts, and washers to pull out the bushings and squeeze them back in just like someone mentioned in another thread. These forums are awesome. I pushed the top bushing down into the exhaust port so maybe if there was some thin metal there I just pushed it out with the bushing.

As you can see there is a seat or ridge. I call it a seat because the bushing was seated against this on the top and the seal was seated against it on the bottom. It almost looks like casting flash, but the bushing and seal fit perfectly against it and was fflush at the top and bottoms of the bore.
To Me it would seem that this would have to go in order for the new bell shaped bushing and seal unit to be pressed in. Has no one ever seen this before?....Hal

Mine definitely didn't have that extra metal. Mine was a clean hole all the way through. I will leave this one for the experts.

This diagram shows the seal #8 that goes (used to go in) there: http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...&inbr=1579&bnbr=4&bdesc=BELL+HOUSING+ASSEMBLY That seal and the busing are replaced by the upper seal #9 shown here: http://www.mercruiserparts.com/showSpecialPicture.asp?pn=805041A2 The new unit replaces the old seal and bushing. The same as my Alpha 1. If you were not replacing the bushing you could just replace the seal.

I undestand all that. I am replacing with the new style bushing. My question is what to do with the thin metal seat looking ring inside the bore. It is obviously machined in there. I have never seen it on any other bellhousin before. I gues I will attemt to remove it ,becouse the new bushing will not go in with it there.

OH! I'll bet i know what that is! That is what is left of the old seal. The metal part, the rubber is gone. Just knock it out. Took a while to figure it out
