Hi, it is possible to do this, but its a real pain! You will notice if you lift it straight up it will catch on the block. Look on the actual arm of the shift shaft and you will see its kept in place with a pin. Tap/drill this out, then remove the arm from the shaft. With this off you *should* be able to raise the shaft. Most engines this age usually are corroded pretty badly, so the lower shift shaft will probs be stuck with the top. An alternative to removing the powerhead is also to take off the arm as described above, then just drop the gearbox (about 6 bolts) and both the shift and drive shaft will come out whole for you to work on. This option gives you much more space to work. Just make sure you dont turn the lower shaft or you will have a nightmare getting the gears back in the right place :) . Mark.
