I'm sure most of us have heard the story about a guy that buys his first boat and after taking it out for the first time discovers that the performace is sub-par. He has a mechanic come out and the mechanic finds the trailer still attached.
Urban Myth?

It could actually happen. I just finished watching the program Myth Busters, where they tested this. They took a 14ft Boston Whaler with a 25hp merc. They tested top speed before (23 mph) and after (4.7 mph) the boat floated almost normally. So maybe, just maybe if the person was naive enough.....it could happen.
Has anyone actually confirmed that this has ever happened?

Re: Urban Myth?

I saw in another post during a discussion about that very show that someone when they sold a boat and had to deliver a trailor to to the other side of the lake left it on there and cruised slowly to the other side and delivered the boat and trailer at once. :) cant remember who it was or what post though.

I’ve heard that one too. Only it was a lady driving the boat and she pulled up to a marina and a dockhand dove in and confirmed the trailer was still attached to the boat. I think its BS.

I can't imagine it could ever happen, I would think no matter what, you could see at least part of the trailer.

It would sure cut down on the # of times you run your prop into a rock!

Be kind of fun to try running with a trailer on it if you didn't care about the trailer or boat. Those myth buster guys have some of the best jobs in the world.

Imagine you're the exec at the Discovery Channel that decides who's going to do the "Myth Busters" show and who's going to the the "Dirty Jobs" show - LOL

Re: Urban Myth?

Wimp is right about that other thread. There were a number of guys who posted that they had seen it done and/or done it on purpose to move a trailer. Accidentally? I don't see how as someone would have to remove the trailer from the hitch. Wouldn't they notice then? :p :p

One of my buds saw it happen a few years ago. Said he almost wet himself laughing so hard.

Re: Urban Myth?

I have done it on purpose.

I wanted to put the trailer on the beach instead of the boat in the beach. I think that my top speed (As far as I wanted to push it) was about the same speed as it would idle at without the trailer under it. Didn't do a thing for the mileage at all,l but VERY stable ride.

When my friend was in line for the boat ramp, he almost got into a fight cause he didn't have a trailer behind his truck. When I drove the trailer up on the ramp with the outboard, 3 people watching on the dock fell into the lake. That alone was worth it.

Did make retrieving a lot faster ;)

Guys, whenever you read something like this that is on the internet or sent to you by email, go to www.snopes.com and check it out (in this case, search boat trailer). Interestingly, it seems like this story might be true, although they don't really give a definitive answer.

As for someone actually doing it because they didn't know better, I think the Jury's still out. But, I'm sure plenty have done it just because they've heard the myth and had to try it out.
