When the cop pulls him over and wants to know why his tail and brake lites are acting like erratic turn signals, then he'll figure out what the white wire is for.

and yes you need to hook the white wire up on the trailer to frame ground , and the same on the tow vehical, it will ground through the hitch ball, but when towing it will bounce around a bit , and make the trailer lights blink on and off

Sounds like there is something at the connection point. Check the connetion point on the frame for paint. Sometimes, if it is a galvanized trailer the galvanizing can cause the same problem, it may act the same as having th eground through the hitch ball. The same with the truck frame. Check your connection. If there is an undercoating it will do the same. Remove the coating down to bare metal, make your connection then re-coat if you have to.

then there is still a problem in the ground wiring. there are only 3 connections, the one at the vehicle frame, the connector, and the frame connection on the trailer frame.

Check the continuity of the ground (white) wires, separate the plug, check the trailer side, plug to trailer, then check the tow vehicle side, plug to frame, one or the other is broken in the insulation or the plug itself is not making contact when connected.

something else to think about....when you are using just the hitch for the ground connection the erratic connection also creates alot of "electrical noise" which may not be good for the many sensitive electronic components on your vehicle.

then something is still wrong the white wires carrie the ground and completes the circuit and should work with out the trailer being atached, in fact the best way to test the lights is with out the trailer hooked up and just the light connector pluged in, you still have a ground not making a connection some place, but your a lot closer, it has to be on bouth trailer and tow vehical.

Need to make sure that the white wire on the vechicle is still surely a ground. May not be making good connection or possibly loosing ground.

The white wire on the trailer side of the plug goes to a ground on the trailer. Find the white wire on the tow vehicle plug and put it to a good ground on the tow vehicle. When the two ends of the four way plug are plugged in, you should have continuity of ground to both sides.
