I am looking at a 1988 bayliner capri with an 85 HP engine. Owner says it has a few issues. Who makes the US Marine outboard? Are these engines usually any good? Thank you.

Re: US Marine engine

It's a Force outboard, formerly made by Chrysler, later made by Mercury, now made not at all.
I had a couple during that era and never had an issue with them. They are of a simple design that is easy to work on.
What are the "few issues" ? That could range from a carb needing cleaning to a completely blown powerhead.

He says he was told it might need coil pack and fuel pump. We tried to start it, when we hit it with some starter fluid, it fired, but quickly died. It seemed it just isn't getting fuel on its own.

"Might"
Without some troubleshooting (compression check, spark check using tester, etc) you will have absolutely no idea what you're dealing with. Also, look out for soft spots in the deck and rotten transom/stringers on the bayliner.

Ya, "might" can get pretty expensive, especially with Force parts geting harder and harder to find, they stopped making that engine years ago and no one makes replacement parts so you are kind of on your own.

Also as Whaler pointed out, check the hull really really well, Bayliners were pretty notorious for having bad transoms and stringers, more the owners falt than the boat but non the less it is 23 years old and lots can go wrong in that time.

Easy way to tell if you should walk is to put your foot on the outboard and slowly get you entire weight on it, if the transom moves more than 1/8'' thank him for his time and walk away.

from the little you told us I would walk unless the boat is REALLY cheap, like a few hundred and that is with a trailer.

Running with starter fluid for a few seconds is a classic example of clogged carbs. Of course it could also be low compression, so test it first.

There is a Chrysler/Force forum on this (iboats.com) website, if you would be interested in reading up on some Q&A's
