Shop computer (winxp) is on fringe of wireless router range. Works (sometimes) using TP-Link wireless adapter, but has weak signal. Trying to move adapter outside shop using 16' active usb extension cable. When extension cable plugged in get error message that usp device not recognized and need to install driver. Haven't been able to find a driver, anyone help me out?

Not that I have a current need but thought it would be cool to learn and tuck it away for future reference. I googled 'poor mans wifi' only to find a zillion links, many of which were absent any specifics on the mechanics of the proposition. ;) About the only info I got from any of the links I tried was the use of a chinese thingy or other.

Re: usb active extension

THe first link on Goolgle references a website on how to put together a reflector for a USB dongle to increase the range.....

Re: usb active extension

Guess wasn't too clear first post. Driver for wireless adapter installed and works fine in the house. Problem is I moved computer into shop about 100' away. It has weak signal so I hooked adapter up with active USB cable. That's when I get "USP device not recognized", and when click on error message says "unknown device" and "driver not installed." Does active USB cable need driver or do I just have a bad cable?

Thanks Dave

Re: usb active extension

It was a little confusing reading your post when you typed USP....and not USB. Typo's in a post can sometimes lead you in the wrong direction.

Some USB adaptor cables need a driver, some don't. Goto the makers website and see if there's a d/l for the driver for WinXp. When XP has the right driver, it can then 'see' the cable and you should be OK.

Re: usb active extension

Thanks for the help. Nothing that came with the cable said anything about a driver needed.

Sorry 'bout the confusion, trying to get up to two fingers typing

Thanks DAve

Re: usb active extension

never heard of a cable needing a driver...

but the issue might be the length of the cable or a bad cable

one customer I had swore that you could not have more then an 8 inch usb cable.

check the mfg of the wifi device they might say how long the cable can be.

usually the usb cable is NOT shielded so it might have problems because of noise.

there are also boosters out there to boost the standard signal

you might also switch to an network card connection instead of a USB that way you can go quite a distance.

Mine has both a network and usb connector.

Update** usb active extension

Update** usb active extension

'cusme is the winner.
The correct answer is RELOAD the driver for the wireless adapter with the extension hooked up.

Thanks for the help
