Interestingly, the local Coast Guard inspector told me they actually discourage flares on Colorado lakes, because of the chance of starting a forest fire.
Probly difrent now, but time was the shotgun was a USCG approved signalling device. Just best not be pointin' it at the coasties when ya light it off ...
