i have a 87 mercruiser with the 3.0l alpha one. my lower unit gears sound like they are getting a little dry. i was told to put some lucas oil in them so it sticks to the gears is this a good idea? also would it hurt to put it in engine?

my lower unit gears sound like they are getting a little dry

you check the level in the drive via the top level screw

if the upper gears run without oil, they suffer quickly - probably to destruction in 5 minutes or so

it is very easy to pull the top cap off the upper and check the gears visually

that's what you want to do, there's no pour in fix for destroyed bearings and gears

What does dry sound like? How can you hear it with the motor running? Certianly not trying to be funny here. I would think that the outdrive companies have more experience for what oils work the best. I have never had a snake oil improve or fix anything. If it is loose and noisey, the oil would be a temporary fix. Its probably just worn out.

It may or may not "hurt"....But just about ALL engine manufacturers indicate in their owners manuals to NOT use oil "additives".

Snake oil additives are great for the people that sell them......

Sorry, can't hear it. lol. First of all did you run the motor with muffs on? If not, read up on impellars. If you have a not normal noise and don't know if its comming from the motor or outdrive, take the outdrive off and run it again for 30 seconds. No noise, problen in outdrive, coupler or gimble bearing. Noise, in motor.

It basically just thickens up the oil. I truly believe it doesnt add any benefit to oil other then that. If you had some 25w40 laying around not being used.... but usually run straight 30 or 40 weight..... might as well use the lucas and 25w40 and save some money, rather then buying new 30 weight. Even then though, you can buy the STP oil additive at walmart for 3 bucks to thicken the oil up. So i guess in that situation id still never use it.

i used mechanics stethescope noise from top on lower unit sounds like a transfercase when a veh is ran in air. noise from engine has consitancy of lifter tick but is a touch louder(can hear the lifter tick from top and louder from oil pan) I will fill the lower unit all the way up and see if the noise goes away.

You should drain all the oil out of the drive and inspect it closely for metal, then measure how much you actually get out of it.

Refill it correctly with the right amount.

Ayuh,... Outdrives MUST be topped off with oil Before being run...

It only needs to be alittle Low to cause Catastrophic Destruction...

there's over 100 moving parts in there. you want us to start listing them?

might be a good idea to pull the drive off the boat and run the engine and see if it is still there. route the garden hose into the thermostat housing supply if running it for more than 30 seconds.

Lucas? You're kidding. Don't use crap like that. Use top brand stuff made from on eof the oil companies. First thing to do would be to check the oil level. Sounds like its low and possibly for some time. The gears might have some heavy wear.

While we are mentioning snake oil. Amsoil.

All marketing, mediocre product. They follow the Bose and Apple business model. Tell people enough that you're better, and they'll believe it even though you can't possible prove it since your product actually isn't any better than the rest.
