Re: Used boat market??

"will only keep this boat for 4 years so I want to avoid a big depreciation hit when I sell it" you cannot look at a pleasure boat purchase as an investment or positive economic event. It is pure cost. .

Yes, and I wish to minimize that "cost" as much as possible.. Boats, cars, motorcycles etc are certainly not investments and I wish to keep as little of my net worth as possible tied up in depreciating toys.

Re: Used boat market??

You mentioned that you wanted to get a great deal. Well to me, a great deal is one where the buyer and seller are BOTH happy, not one where one party took advantage of some outside circumstance to rip off the other party.

I have no interest in ripping off anyone, if somebody CHOOSES to accept my cash it is a win win as far as I am concerned. It is a free country nobody is being forced to do anything.

I agree 110%! The post where both parties leave happy to me means that you made an offer and the seller accepted. If he is not happy with the offer, don't accept it. I do not get offended when people low ball me, I actually think of someone with no ba!!s if they don't. I don't have to accept the offer but at least I know where they are coming from. Negotiating is fun and part of ANY cash deal I do. I mentioned mine was listed for 4500.00 and I got it for 2200. I have 5000.00 budgeted to buy a boat. With the extra money I had I was able to take the family on vacation with the new boat. Had I not low balled him, that would have been one less vacation we would have had. I never twisted his arm or forced him to sell it that cheap, all I did was ask. If he wasn't happy with the offer then he shouldn't have accepted. When I flashed 22 crisp Benjamin's he took it. He tried to talk me up but I wasn't willing to budge. I was happy, I don't know if he was, but I really don't care because he did not have to accept my offer. I really don't understand why everyone finds it offensive to negotiate.

Re: Used boat market??

I'd agree on the regional price differences. I'm in MN and there is a huge demand for boats here since we have 11,000+ lakes and more registered owners than anywhere. My .02 is I found boats cheaper down in the southern states and more in some East and West coast areas. Even the new, showroom floor boats were astonishingly cheap down south where shipping isn't as costly compared to the same model sitting in a MN show room. I found MN dealers won't match prices from state to state. Now take into account the massive amount of regional economic differences and really anything goes these days. For example MN has a low unemployment rate compared to much of the country. I'd say that every negotiation can be taken in a vacuum. Now, being the season is over, the boats for sale are a mere trickle of what they were in July here. What kinds and years of boats are you looking at? I think there is another factor.

It occurs to me that boats are also more expensive in MN due to the short selling season, so the dealers have to pay carrying costs as well as fixed costs during the dead times--and have to recapture those expenses. Also in temperate areas, boats can be left outside--cheaper than indoor storage for boats waiting to be sold.
