My 1991 Johnson 40 hp was clacking. I took it apart and found that the rod journal on the #1 piston is discolored and very very rough.

I guess I can get it repaired but thought I'd look for a used one also. I see one one ebay from a 1971 Johnson 50 hp. Any chance that is the same crank as in my engine? Anybody know?

Re: Used crankshaft

Nabeel.... I have no idea of the "complete" interchange, however I do know that the 1971 50hp crankshaft is a completely different item and will not fit your 1991 40hp Johnson.

The interchange that I am aware of (retired, books only go to 1992) is as follows:

Crankshaft 334203 fits from 1984 to 1992 (last year in my book). This applies to the following HP engines: 25/35/40/45/50/55/60hp in the above years.

Your crankshaft part number is 334203 and lists for about $800.00 US. Hopefully you can find one somewhere in your area. I do have one left in my remaining stock but check first on this site for whatever you need.

You'll probably need to replace that connecting rod also. No doubt (I suspect) the problem was caused by a fouled carburetor.

Re: Used crankshaft

Thanks, Joe.

Yes, I was having idling and fuel starvation problems leading up to the clacking. I guess it took me too long to sort out those problems and the damage resulted.
