Hey Guys<br />I hope you don't get too tired (sp) of me. ;) <br />As some of you know I am looking at used boats.<br />I found another one.<br />'84 150 Merc. <br />My ? is if it runs on a water hose or in a drum.<br />will it run in the water? I may not be able to take the boat out for a spin (weekends are out and it is dark when I get in from work).<br /><br />Thanks

I sure wouldnt be buying a boat without a test drive.I dont think a drum or muffs give any indication of how a motor runs in the water.<br /> If it was me I would want to know how the boat<br />handles as well.

My opinion is that it won't necessarily run good on the water if it runs good on the hose. Any outboard will idle fine, but that doesn't mean it will perform under load. My current outboard was bought used and it ran fine on the hose. Crapped out under throttle because the carbs needed rebuilding. Spent another $300 on that after I bought the motor.<br /><br />Good luck with your search.

Hi <br />A few more details <br />"Just overhauled statars, carbs, water pump, etc.."<br />Mike Hood (Texas Propeller) did the mechanical<br />work.<br />I will try to get it in the water, but I do not know if time will allow.<br />Thanks

get it on the water for a test run, i wasted allot of $$$$$ and time dealing with a motor that was rebuilt but hasnt run worth the sunday trash. i can show you a list of new parts i put on this motor and it still is not rite.

I would not necessarily walk away from a rig I couldn't water test if I took that into consideration when negotiating the price. Bought a 19'er years ago and I assumed the motor was trash and that I would have to rebuild it or replace it. Negotiated the price with that in mind - put a new impeller in the water pump and it fired right up. Ran it for 7 years.

Let's see...<br /><br />If a mistake cost me $300, and I could have taken a vacation day to find out, then negotiated the bucks off of the price, I think I'd be ahead!<br /><br />I don't make $300/day.<br /><br />Don't buy a pig in a poke is what dad used to say!

I agree with so little although running on muffs will not tell you that it will perform under load there are a few things you can do Ie check the lower unit do a compression test etc... I would tell the guy that you want it checked by a mech at the least see what he says and so little is right if you figure what the boat trailer accessories and motor are worth seperatly negotiate the price with the cost of the motor being $100 if he accepts then you have to invest 400 to get the motor working then your stll ahead of the game
