Howdy strangers! Been awhile!

The 25 Merc on my 16' Jon is toast. I've been wanting to replace it with a four stroke for awhile anyway, so now I'm looking. I'd really rather NOT get another 25. The boat is under 300 pounds and a lot of fun with a 25, but if I had a 9.9 or smaller I could use it on rivers with hp limits.

My questions:
1. What's the smallest outboard y'all reckon would get it on plane with 500 pounds of people and gear? Not looking for speed, just the ability to plane out and run upstream on occasion. Think 8 horseys would be sufficient?
2. I recall several iboaters consistently liking and recommending one or two online purveyors of outboards. Can anyone refresh my memory on those?

If I were re-powering I would buy a 25. I had a boat similar to yours and a 25 was adequate. I never tried a 9.9, but my guess is that it would be marginal, and surely would need to be re-propped.

I don't live near an under-10 requirement, so that would not be an issue to me.

I have bought 3 motors (3.5, 5 and 25) from Onlineoutboards.com and have been quite happy with them. They are a certified dealer, so they register the warranty with the sale.

I would buy a Suzuki 9.9hp.. You can upgrade to 20hp in a snap ( but it's not cheap )

I bought my DF25A recently from Online Outboards and it came quick. I don't think there is much advantage to buying a used motor unless your deal hunting. The cost difference isn't much

The John/Jon is defined as a flat bottom boat.....popular in rivers and protected waters. Aluminum Johns are about all that are available in my boating circles so you have a light weight boat with an excellent planing hull...nice and flat, especially at the transom, on a light weight boat.

I rented an 18' once and had a 9.9 McCullough outboard. Load was me, engine, gas and gear. Have no idea as to speed, but recalling the fact that part of the outing was just boat riding, I apparently enjoyed the experience, meaning that it planed out and ran the boat at a good clip. Nothing special about the engine....OEM spec with general purpose alum. prop that came on it when new I guess....I bought it used and the color of the 3 bladed prop matched the white of the engine.

I believe a 9.9 would be okay for your application.
