A gentleman has a 2012 Tohatsu 50 TLDI remote he wants to sell. Less than 50 hours on it. Excellent condition. What should I offer him?

How does it run, what is he asking and where are you? All three play a part in negotiating a final price.

Runs great, barely used, a Tohatsu mechanic checked it. I'm in NYC, he's in Plymouth, Mass.

Pinter Boat, Every engine works great until you buy them, especially when you can't see them in person. Not saying it is good or bad, but I'd have to see it and check it out in person if I were to buy it. But that is just me for what that's worth.

I understand. I just want a ballpark figure. As I said, a Tohatsu mechanic who I personally know gives it his approval. He also knows the seller (he sold him the engine originally). $3500?

I tried. Nobody wants to sell the things! The last time I saw one was earlier in the summer. It was an older one - $1500.

I saw that too. The NADA guide puts the value around $3000 ( I don't know how accurate or reliable that is, but it's something to go on). I was thinking somewhere in that neighborhood. The gentleman hardly used it and I want to be fair to him. He had the boat built, outfitted it, but didn't really use it. He's parting it all out now. I just want to be reasonable and not insult him with a low ball offer, hence my consultation here on this forum.

Its 4 years old so probably out of warranty and you're taking all the risk so 1/2 of the price of a new one should put you in the ballpark. You could also ask the mechanic, he may have a better feel for what they cost.

An acquaintance told me that a dealer would sell it for half msrp if it is 100% clean and running. I think this puts us in the ballpark of $3000.

3 grand would be a nice purchase offer without insulting the gentleman. 50 run hours is nothing...
