I'm replacing the rings in my mercruiser 140 and was wondering if I should use one of those glaze removing tools that attach to a drill to prepare the cylinders. I'm using cast iron rings not moly.

The cylinders currently look very good and are nice and smooth although I don't really know what glaze looks like.

any help really appreciated.

Shiny cylinder walls are what you DON'T want. The rings will never seat.
You do need to use a ball hone (best tool for the job) to put the cross hatch in the cylinders. This is what helps to seat the new rings and is a necessary procedure. Without it, you will use oil and loose compression, and have a lot of extra blow by.

Thanks again Don.
The cylinders don't look shiny, they are acrually dull in appearance but they are smooth.

Any time new rings are installed the cylinder should be honed.

Another point Marc, is to use a ring groove cleaning tool on your pistons so the new rings will float smoothly.

wynter, thanks. I bought a ring groove cleaning tool, it worked well once I figured out which direction to mount the cutter.
