Using car parts

I hope this is in the right area. I need some tune up parts(cap, rotor, plugs, wires, and especially an ignition sensor). If I could find these at an automotive store, would these parts be okay to use on the boat? How hard will it be to find the parts or any terms to say to the store so they dont look at me like I'm retarded for coming there for parts.

Engine is a 305 5.0L mercruiser LX thunderbolt ign.

Since the thunderbolt ignition system was never used in an automotive application, you won't find the parts at an autoparts store. Best you may be able to get are the spark plugs.

I believe NAPA carries marine parts. How well they are trained on them will probably be hit or miss. At the discount auto stores, if it isn't in the computer, they can't help you.

Cap, rotor, and senser, I believe are unique to T4/5. But Sierra has equivelents. Plugs if you get AC they should be the marine. NGK plugs would be fine. many auto-part stores don't keep stock in the particular ones you need though. Wires probably can me matched to auto, but on a boat, seldom need replacing, maybe not worth hassle of makig sure the right boots, length, and diameter, etc. Sierra has equivelent.

If wires stay good for awhile on boats I may just not worry about those(saves me money anyways). I am really hoping a tune-up will fix the issues I have been having as discussed in my other thread which has yet to be provided with any advice hint hint. The main item I think I need is the ignition sensor. But it sounds like with the thunderbolt system only being a marine application I will probably have no luck at my local store.

In my experience... auto wires are either not long enough to clear the manifolds (depending on the routing), or the coil to cap wire is alway wrong. Get's to be a hassle running back and forth to a store that is marine clueless.

Tip on the wires....Get ACCEL make your own wires. Not only are they high end and alot better than most wires you can buy, you can cut them to lenght....know they have the right boot, and they are made better, as well as are stronger as in carry more current then any cheap wire you can buy.

BEST part...get the one for the 8 banger and it will cost you a grand total of $23.99 at advance auto! Gotta love it!


As for the sensor...Sorry man, hopefully you can get one cheap, But i have no idea if they would carry that or even be able to get one. Best option...find a private mech. in your area and tell him what you need. I am sure he will be able to help you out. if not havein one in stock, then be able to order one for ya.
