I have a 2003 yamaha outboard 4 stroke fuel injected engine. Instead of using the little hand pump bulb, can I use an electric fuel pump. Like the kind they sell at napa stores. I think it would work fine, what do you guys think. the engine is 115 hp.

don't quite understand what you're getting at. i used to pump away with my older carbed 2-stroke before starting it, but i never touch the primer bulb before starting my yammy 4-stroke. never hesitates starting. why would you want to make that feature electric?

I also thinks that's a bad idea. You can overpressurize the fuel system with an electric pump and cause damage. The bulb lets you feel when you've applied enough pressure.

It doesnt start up right away,it has to crank for a while then starts, I thought maybe it wasnt getting the fuel right away. whenever I sqeeze the bulb it never gets hard, even after putting a new one on.It acts likes its bypassing something. Sometimes it wont start at all and I have to squeeze the bulb and then it starts. But it always takes about 4 seconds of cranking before it fires off. Any ideas

Are you holding the bulb vertically when you squeeze it?

My boat came with electric motor primers that were activated by a toggle switch on the helm. They were neat while they worked. I went out one time and one of the primers failed. Off they came.

no I will try holding it vertical, also I have read on another post that I may need to get a "vapor recovery kit" installed by the dealer, it is free I guess. Also maybe I should have the bulb sitting vertical all the time to keep the fuel from bleeding back to the tank, I am going to try it. when ever the bulb is horizontal it feels like there is no presure there. Thanks for the input

Re: using electronic fuel pump instead of pump bulb?

Had an F-80 a few years bach that was a bear to start. Just started using an 05 F-115 and it starts right up. Saw a suggestion on some post that recommended leaving the key on run for 6 to 8 seconds to let the electronics do its thing before attempting a start. Dont know if it makes a difference but it works for me. Dont have a factory maint. manual yet so i have not been able to look at the wiring diagram. regards fred

That motor should have some sort of vacuum pump at the motor. That electric pump you are thinking of is NOT designed for that type of motor...........go to a REAL mechanic and find out the problem. Just probably need a new $1 diaphragm. Running a electric pump with no idea of the pressure, or no return/bypass line will have that thing pissing gas all over when it blows off a fuel line, and you get a early Christmas (chestnut roasting on a open fire)
PS. Go post this in the Yamaha forum, where it belongs.

I don't give a damn where you post it, but if you post in "Yamaha and Suzuki Outboard Troubles and Repair", well, just a stupid thought on my part, but would you not get a better response? You post this in "Boat Topics-NOT engine topics", and expect results. Blow yourself up then, what do I care. Post in places where you won't get a straight answer, and **** people off trying to help anyway. ESAD :D
