rebuilding my merc 75. Have not been able to get all gaskets to put it back together. Is it ok to use a high-temp silicone type gasket maker? Say, for between the powerhead and driveshaft housing.

there is also always the possibility of using a sheet of gasket material and cutting out your own... I've heard scary things about people who use RTV as gaskets... if you do go the liquid route, Loctite 518 is acceptable between case halves... But, like Laddies said, go the real gasket route. Took me forever, but I finally found a powerhead gasket kit made by Sierra. It's got EVERYTHING (except crank oil seals)...believe it or not, I found it cheapest on amazon.com.
