I have a question for you guys that have done stringer, transom and deck replacement. OK, I'm starting my own project and have read tons of threads. There are many different kinds of poly resins which one is right for stringer, transom and deck replacement. Also I recently read that when using poly, your top coat must include wax or it wont cure and remain tacky. I dont recall seeing wax used in any of the threads i read. Can someone shed some light on this for me?

Re: Using polyester resin as a top coat

I used vinyl ester resin and encased everything in fiberglass, not just resin. VE is more water resistant and has higher adhesion characteristics.

Re: Using polyester resin as a top coat

To answer your question you use a laminating resin for all of those. The final coat of resin should have wax added to aid in the waterproofing of the resin. Some do some don't especially below deck on stringers. Above deck, if you're going to use gelcoat on the deck or transom then wax is not used except on the final coat of the Gelcoat. The first link in my signature below has drawings and details on how to do all what you're requesting. Your boat is prolly made from Poly so poly will be fine for your restoration. Really no need for the added expense of VE or Epoxy resin. Post some pics of your boat and we'll be happy to help.
