Someone has told me to run a tank of gas using sea foam to clean out my carb.... Are there any adverse effects running this product through my motor?

Re: Using Sea Foam

Many here run a can with every tank to keep the engine carbon free. No harm will be done and it will keep your engine and fuel system in good shape...

Nope. What are your symptoms? Just asking because I'm interested in hearing whether seafoam alone will cure 'em.

Re: Using Sea Foam

Seafoam is really just a decarb product for your combustion chamber and rings, it's not really a carb cleaner, it may clean them somewhat, but if you have dirty/varnished carbs, the only way your really gonna get them clean is to tear them down and soak them and rebuild them.

For decarbing purposes you don't need to run an entire fule tank of Seafoam through your engine, maybe a gallon or two of treated fuel, or you can spray it down the carb throats.

Look in the FAQ section here for decarbing processes.

So many people use Sea Foam periodically just to be
on the safe side?

Can I run Sea Foam at home using the ears on my motor? Or is it best to use it running on the water?

Re: Using Sea Foam

You can run it at home on the muffs, but see your other post before trying to use seafoam to clean the carbs. Seafoam will not clear badly clogged carbs. Only manual cleaning will work. It does work to keep the carbon at bay inside the engine and fuel lines clear to an extent. They also say it is a good fuel stabilizer for extended storage purposes, but I have no experience so far with that aspect.

You might want to read this thread too. It explains how to use Seafoam and decarb your motor.

It doesn't matter where you use it. If you are doing a decarb process at home you want to alert the neighbors as they will very likely call the fire department due to the smoke coming from your driveway. d:) SeaFoam is a fuel system cleaner, it is a fuel stabilizer, it is a decarb product. It has many uses in your boat engine as well as your car. Minor fuel issues can be resolved with SeaFoam. A severely neglected fuel system (primarily carbs) will require disassembly and cleaning to correct related symptoms.

Re: Using Sea Foam

After a normal run (without seafoam, ect) is there any benefit to disconnecting the gas tank connection and running the carb dry before hauling the boat out? Would this help keep the gunk from building up in the carb by removing the gas or enhance its build up by aiding evaporation?

Re: Using Sea Foam

That process is not recommended for the simple reason that all carbs will not run out of fuel at exactly the same time so some cylinders will quit firing and essentially be run dry. If this is a trailer boat, use a fuel stabilizer in each tank of fuel and the fuel will not degrade for six months or so. Remember, running a cylinder dry means no lubrication. Just shut the engine off and trailer the boat home or to storage location. Properly treated, fuel and the fuel system will not be a problem.

Re: Using Sea Foam

The varnishing effect will build up over time just from normal running...emptying the carb bowls doesn't dry the orfices and other wet surfaces. Which is a good reason to add Seafoam to fuel. But note that I don't have any evidence to support that other than the shared experiences of fellow iboaters.
