It would be quite the sight to capsize and the only evidence is a slick and packing peanuts everywhere.

No ..... they dissolve with gasoline too easy.

Not only that...but a small crack/hole and they could all float out!

I'm maybe ok with the noodles in an aluminum boat..but like others have said, packing peanuts...they're just too small.

My packing peanuts suggestion was for comic relief. Equivalent to filling the voids with Alka Seltzer.

Sorry, totally missed the intended sarcasm...should've looked at who posted it!

(But I did laugh!)

Pop rocks would also give you an auditory indication of a leak :)

Sorry... I shouldn't drink and post.

Re: Using swim noodles for floatation

I do like the idea of the kids foam noodles, but i havent baught one in a long time. How much do those things run at walmart or etc? I'm guessing if you baught 20 or 30 of them it would probably cost much more than some 2 part pouring expandable foam.

I havent gotten to the pouring foam part of my project yet, but the thing that continues to scare me is thinking about how much force is exerted when that foam expands.....if you cut a whole in a new deck and pour too much in can it actually warp or lift up on the deck and cause damage or warping?

I didn't go the noodle route for financial reasons. I don't think I got a particularly good deal on them and ended up spending aroun $200 for 72 noodles. I did it cuz it was similar in cost to the sheet foam (that stuff is pricey at least around here) but easier to work with with less foam-cutting mess and potentially less rattle under the deck.

I'm going to use the pool noodles in my aft section under the deck.

My pour in foam had gas it in...bad fill tube. I want the last section pieces to be easily removable and allow water flow.

becareful there's an anti-noodler in the forum. noodles should be called "tubes of extruded polystyrene" from now on!!!!!!!

i have used pink building insulation. it works well. the pour in 2 part over it is even better.the 2 part stuff is expensive compared to others mentioned. empty plastic bottle are great. either a nylon bag or even old nylon stocking do great to keep them in place. another thought is plastic shrink wrap. to keep them together

Re: Using swim noodles for floatation

Before my current project I had done two other floor replacements, all in glass boats. The first I didn't put any flotation back in at all (young, broke, & dumb) The second I used the two part stuff. Way to messy, expensive, and just an all around pain in the butt, never again.
My first impression of the pool noodles was, WOW cheesy, but after thinking about it, and all things considered, I kinda like the idea of joining the Mickey Mouse club.;) I think I'm going to try a combination of re-using the good original foam, pool noodles, and insulation panels, and using a little Great Stuff just to kinda glue it all together.
I might even throw in the odd beer can full of Great Stuff to fill small voids.:D

Re: Using swim noodles for floatation

I am one of the few anti-noodlers. When I rebuilt my boat, I used pour foam, lots of it, probably cost me $400 to 500 just for the foam. Why did I do it, because I know besides floatation it also plays a structural role. How much of a structural role, I do not know because I am not privy to the design information the engineers used when they designed the boat.

Before I rebuilt my boat, it had wet foam, lots of it, and it reeked. Was that the problem or just a symptom of another problem? I think that if the deck was not rotted, then water would have not got into the foam. IMO the wet foam was caused by my rotten deck not vice versa. Now that it was rebuilt three years ago, properly, I would wager that the foam is dry.

My position is, that if it was there, I will replace it. The pool noodles do not add any structure, and they do not fill the voids entirely, there is still significant air between the noodles. If I were to hit a dead head, of which there are many around here, the foam could make a difference. At the end of the day, you can use whatever you want, but for the safety of me and my family, if foam was there, I will replace it.

Another point, in my line of work, I am very careful of what advice I give to my clients. If I say something that results in an incident, then I can be held liable. CYA approach. I carry this over to my personal life. If your boat had foam in it, then that is what I would use, just do whatever you can to keep the water out. Because despite what many of you say, there are good reasons to use foam.

Have a great day

Rob.

Some came without foam and same design so i would say it good either way.

Hey Rob, many of us noodlers are tin boat guys. Your point is valid for many fiberglass boats.

I thought the tin vs glass boats thing through too. I doubt I could shatter my hull to have the noodles come out as it's alum.

If I were going to see the ocean or any big waves on a glass boat then I would have probably gone pour in foam for the structural aspect or slamming into a log to to keep all that floatation material in there.

I floated our family of five in a pool on a bundle of about 5 solid core noodles. We were pretending we were refuges except going to Cuba. The beaches are pretty nice there :)

My reference is for a glass boat, I have never worked on tinnies so I cannot comment on their structure since I don't know.

Have a great day,

Rob.

PPL need to start reading threads from the beginning. This started from a tinny noodle question. Now there are 2-3 threads on it.
