I'm guilty of dredging!!!!<br /><br />I was engulfed in a post that had a link to this one in it. In my haste I answer this instead of the other one. Oh well .......<br /><br />On the other hand, synthetics are always a topic of interest!!!

Re: Using Synthetic oil in newer outboards ?

Not to start (restart) the Great Debate but although I am a fan of sythetics and run it in all my vehicles the manual for my 4 stroke 115 Yamaha clearly states that using engine oil that is not specifically for 4 stoke outboard motors will void the warranty. I called Yamaha and asked them what that meant exactly. They said the oil had to be labelled "for use in 4 stroke outboard motors". I also called Mobil and and explained this to them and asked if they had any plans in the works to label Mobil 1 as such to protect the many users from voided warranties. They said(not suprisingly) they had no plans to do so and that although they "felt" Mobil1 was quite suitable for 4 stroke outboards they would not officially recommend or endorse it's use in them. Not to argue with you Kanadakid but that was my experience when I looked into this...W

ARCWINSTON, the NMMA (the people who brought you TC-W3) has a new certification for 4-stroke outboards called FC-W. Hopefully this will clear up 4-Stroke oil confusion in the future.<br /> NMMA FC-W, if you want to have a look.<br />Interestingly, I see your engine has been chosen as the test-bed for the functional performance tests.

Re: Using Synthetic oil in newer outboards ?

My 2004 Yamaha 50 horse 4-stroke manual says 4 stroke MOTOR oil, not outboard oil???? What would be the difference between 4-stroke motor oil and outboard oil? I guess I'll have to send Yamaha a note clarifying that, as I believe mobil 1 meets all the API/SAE specs. <br /><br />All I know is that when I duckhunt in zero degree weather, dino oil is sludge and mobil 1 flows just fine .....

I notice that oil manfs. cannot claim there products "meet or exceed NMMA FC-W " without licensing.

Get over it, and get a life.<br /><br />If this is what you are refering to, then you are just a bit too sensitive.<br /><br />"But then I have always thought that you know who is you know who. I was told I am wrong about that also".<br /><br />I was just feeling a bit frisky that day, and was more pointing towards Forktail than you.<br /><br />Honestly, I think you are doing a great job, Im having a great time seeing you go through what I have for a while. :D <br /><br />Besides, I have publicly opoligised to you and even offered my hand in friendship in the past and you just ignored me without even giving me the time of day. Speaking of rude. <br /><br />Im offended :p

Just we thought it was safe to back in the water! At least with the FC-W, we can start a whole new bunch of oil arguments.......kinda tired of the old ones anyway. :D

There is no such animal. Or its something new I have never heard of. They are NOT Chrome as you state (Chromium). Never were, never will. Chrome is hard as a rock, never seal. And "Reduced Tension"? Combustion pressure seals the ring, not tension. Moly rings are the correct answer. Chromoly (sp) is a type of steel. Things get twisted.<br />Ps. Hard chrome aint shiny either.

HHHHMMMM, I kinda thought that was what many of us were.  Those of us who post a lot, take time out of our busy days to try and help others on our own time. Sometimes we even manage to figure a few things out. ;) <br /><br />The fact remains that if TheOilDoc would participate in other forum topics, he would be much more widely accepted. Not that he isnt to a point, but he is deffinatly, "Not one of the guys", IMHO. <br /><br />Ive never seen him post anything that is missleading, I feel that he reallt does know his stuff, just a bit stuff shirted so to speak, and a bit sensitive.
