dicovery times this mornings has shown where divers have discoverd that the uss arizona was sank by bombs not topedos as history has said. all these years and now they figured this out.they showed where there was no damage to the hull where a torpedo enter into her.it was a high level bomber hit right in front of the mast penetrating thru several hulls into the compartment carring gun powder causing a explosion to ripe thru several bulkheads before the explosion finally erupted thru the bow deck. hmmmmmm

Historians never said the Arizona was sunk by torpedoes, LDS. They said a bomb went down the funnel. That was wrong.

What Discovery's investigation confirmed was that the bomb that sunk her penetrated the deck for'd the fore 14" gun turret and exploded in the for'd magazine. This is not new. That theory has been around for a while. Discovery found evidence that confirmed it.

Yea, I was going to say that I read somewhere that the 1760# bomb with 50# of explosive went in the ammunition storage area and blew up, so this is old news to me.

There was a small number of Jap mini subs used in the attack on Pearl Harbor, six I think. They were two man subs. But there is no evidence they had any effective roll in the attack. Thats probably where the rumors started.

The JIN did use torpedo planes in the attack on Pearl. The Japanese had developed a torpedo that could be dropped from a Kate (a model of aircraft they used) and not go so deep before coming up to proper depth that it would stick in the harbor bottom. Pearl is a shallow harbor and this presented problems for the JIN in this regard.

I was aware the JIN had torpedo planes, I just wasn't aware of any theories about the Arizona being sunk by one. 'Course my grandfather was career Navy and he was there, so he probably would've negated any false rumors I ever heard. He also had more books dissecting that attack than the local library had in it's entire inventory, I believe.

I hate to do this but did you guys know that the attack on Pearl Harbor was inspired by an attack carried out by my old squadron, 819 sqdn ?

Taranto harbor in Italy 1940: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Taranto

It was celebrated every year in the mess until the squadron was finally disbanded in the 90's. In those days they used Swordfish aircraft and as you'll see in the article above it gives some detail about the use of air-drop torpedoes in coastal waters.

From the Arizona research website.
The Japanese bomb that destroyed USS Arizona was an 800kg (1,760lbs) armor-piercing bomb dropped from a high-altitude bomber. Almost eight feet in length, the bomb carried only about 50 lbs of explosive, but that was enough to detonate Arizona's forward ammunition magazines. Postwar analysis suggests that Arizona was hit by four of these weapons, but -- contrary to initial reports made immediately after the attack -- there is no evidence the ship was struck by a torpedo.

The Fleet Air Arm (Royal Navy) use the old Fairey Swordfish biplanes to attack the Italian fleet.

The plane, known as the "stringbag" or more properly, the Fairey Swordfish, was obsolete at the beginning of the war, but did its' job so well that it outlasted its' replacement and finished out the war 6 years later.

Another victory for the Swordfish was the crippling of the battleship Bismarck, disabling its' rudder so it could only steam in a circle. British battleships finished her off at point blank range.
