Just picked up an old aluminum boat (50's? 60's?) and while searching for signs of what brand it might be, I noticed a small metal "badge" attached to the rear of the boat. It's paint was pretty faded, but I could make out a motto on it, and after doing a little research, found what I think is the exact same design on a patch (on eBay):

I'm assuming the owner must have been assigned to the USS Proteus, was given a small commemorative badge of some sort, and attached it to his boat? Was this something navy guys used to do, commonly?

Just curious.

Thanks

Not very common, but it has been done.
I served in the Submarine Force for 23 yrs, I fly the "silver dolphin" flag from my stern.
just something different to show my pride
