I am buying a 28 Carver mariner with twin 305's with v drives, the port motor runs great but when i took her out and ran her the oil pressure light on the helm never went out and the engine quickly started to overheat, once i slowed he down the engine temp went right back to norm, from looking at nthe system i see there is an oil screen on the v drive, going to check that first. I also saw that the cooling system sucks water through the hull, then the VDrive, and to the engine, so it makes since to me that the engine could overheat do to the V Drive overheating! I guess what i am asking is if anyone has experianced this prob with a v drive!

Re: v drive

The V-drives are originally Borg-Warner items. They are called V-drives because the input and output shafts are on the same side of the tranny, creating a V shape in the line up of the shafts. Some people confuse V-drive with Velvet Drives, but they're two different transmissions.

Re: v drive

never saw a walther unit that had water flowing through it.
many had an external oil cooler.
some velvet drive stuff had a tranny overtemp switch.
but nothing do do with ANY engine oil pressure stuff.
engine and drive oils are seperate monkeys.

Re: v drive

Hmm
Every Walther I?ve seen has water thru it.
The light on the dash is controlled by a normally closed switch mounted on the v-drive, it opens when v-drive oil pressure reaches about 5 psi
Swap the switch from side to side and see if the problem moves.
Or hook up a pressure gauge and see if you have at least 5psi at 1200 rpm
Or just replace the switch ---- there is a very good chance that?s the problem with the light staying on.
For the v-drive to be making enough heat to affect the engine it would have to be almost sized- up ---- you would be way down on R.P.M.s on that engine.
But to answer your question no I?ve never seen overheating v-drive cause an engine overheat.
Good Luck Muc

Re: v drive

yeah was kinda thinkin that too, prob looking at a water pump issue, that light is strictly oil pressure correct?

Re: v drive

I have a 1985 Carver Voyager I just bought with the same setup, my stuff is working just fine though, but I would be curious to see what you find out with your issue.

I just replaced a seawater pickup pump and adjusted the Shaft Seal. Not easily accessed, but doable in case you were wondering.

Re: v drive

Haven't gone through enough gas to get a feel for mileage, but I do notice my guages read low for fuel. When they are reading a little over 1/8 of a tank for each, I put 50 gallons vs 75 holding in each, indicating I still had around 25 gallons per tank.

Cruise is a good 18 kts at 3000 rpm, and it gets right up on plane. Haven't really done WOT top end as I know how much fuel those quadrajets can dump when their secondaries open!

Was able to get it up on plane and cruising at ~16 kts with 10 people and about 100lbs of extra gear on board too, so the power is there.
