GluvIt, Coat-It go on the inside, they can be a runny drippy mess, much easier to 'hide' on the inside.

Same luck applies though, if you don't have any rivets up the hull sides, you can leave it on the trailer & apply the gluvit w/ out it running much if any.

I would replace leaky rivets, and then cover in FASCO - Steelflex. Its an epoxy you paint on the outside of the hull, and totally seals it up. 60 bucks. I used it in my SN build.

+1 Apply Gluv-it to the INTERIOR of the boat. You never repair a leak from the outside in. Always from the inside out.

Steelflex is an exterior paint, Gluvit and Coat-it are inside epoxy coatings. You can do Steelflex on the outside and Gluvit on the inside if you want, but Steelflex is an expensive paint.

Just Gluvit or Coat-it on the inside, and a Rustoleum paint job inside and out and you'll be good to go and save some money.

You have to prime over bare aluminum with an etching primer like zinc chromate before you can paint it inside or out. If you don't use the etching primer the paint will peel off in short order.

On the inside you will paint over your Gluvit or Coat-it to protect it from UV breakdown from the sun. The Gluvit goes on first, then the primer because you'll have bare aluminum spots, and then the paint.

Actually Steelflex is a two part epoxy, with added colorant....not a paint. It is made as an outer coating for the bottoms of airboats n such. I would not use it on the inside as I think that would be tough to apply vs rolling it on the outside. No need for primer, just a clean surface.

Many on here have had good luck with gluvit. My hull was going to be gloss black, so black steelflex epoxy looks great on the outside in my case.

That could be defined as paint.

There's no way I'd apply a coating of any kind to bare aluminum without an etching primer first.

There's several variations of "SteelFlex"...Which one are you referencing? Not sure about SteelFlex, and their website does not have info, but Most epoxy based products do NOT have UV protection so they are not suitable for exterior marines use unless you intend to coat them with paint or some other protective coating to shield from the sun. I'm going to disagree with JNG on this one, and point out that Gluvit and Coat-It are well known and used products by the Tin Boat crowd and they do not recommend using a primer before their application. Both are2-part epoxy based products and from what my research tells me very similar to Steelflex. I would think that Steelflex would not require a primer either. That's my 2? worth and that's prolly double it's value.

Easy fellas, lol I think your all right in a sense.
I also would not "paint" any aluminum without etching primer first. But with some of the coatings,
They do state no primer needed.

I have a question, if I have a deck on the boat and a floor then uv rays shouldn't be a issue correct?
Unless it exposed, then I would obviously cover it with paint.

And yes, I also noticed that the website has different steelflex coating.
Thers a "super slick" version, and many others.
I to am wondering what is most commonly used.
The prices vary greatly between.

Hey, why on all theses sites I see people saying it glides over debris and rocks without chipping, and right in its description it says glides effortlessly over debris and such... that would leave me to believe it goes on the outside bottom...?
Could someone shed some light on this?

The Steelflex Epoxy I used is listed here under Fasco Epoxies site: Fasco unlimited

Fifth one down, Steelflex Neutral #9x

My actual order/part numbers were: (1 gallon of Steelflex #9xn-1L / 4 oz of black pigment #109) It was roughly $55 total. I think this is what is most commonly used.

What I would do if you have a few minutes, is to give them a call @ 305.821.9441. Ask for Jerry. Explain to him what you are trying to do, and see what he says. Maybe it's what you are looking for, maybe not....but I guarantee after talking with him you will know. He is very nice and knowledgeable.

WOG - you are correct. This product is a 2 part epoxy (resin & hardener) used without primer.

What is the pigment for? To change the color ?
And do you have to prime the bottom before applying steelflex?

Well, I called steelflex and asked for Jerry...turns out he unexpectedly died in October!
I spoke to his sister and she was very friendly and knowledgeable.

It's $46 + $8 for pigment, +31 shipping COD or $19 if I mail a check.

UNFORTUNATELY, You can't apply it in weather under 72?...
What do I do now?
Is gluvit and coat it the same?

Gluvit and Coat-It are basically the same but...They too will prolly not want to be applied in temps below 70?, that's just the nature of Epoxy based products.

Ok thanks
Yea I was quite embarrassed asking for him lol
And no unfortunately I don't have a basement
I really was pondering the idea of a carport and a space heater

What do you guys think of sealing the rivets and seams from inside with 3M 5200?
Ive heard this works good and it can be applied at lower temps...
This is the route im considering for now...
