V4 90 stalls when cover installed.

I have 87 evinrude v4 90 that stalls when the cover is put on. Put new spark plug wires on and still having problem, any help is appreciated. Thanks

The powerhead base gasket is common to blow out on the port side and leak exhaust under the hood.

As said above maybe a good exhaust leak.

Raised the cover to get good idle, then duct taped around cover opening to get good seal, results no problem. Took off the port side rear hold down clamp on cover, clamped two remaining hold downs on cover, results no problem. Problem seems to lie with the proximity of the of the port side cover hold down when clamped down. Question whats changed since this motor has run perfectly since 1987. Thanks RDK

There isnt much spare room in behind the sparkplug cover, i have zip tied all the wires to places where they wont get interfered with by the metal strip on the inside of the cover which the latch is on

Ps it also helps if you put the cover on with the motor in the down position

sounds like a spark plug lead is bleeding and jumping to the rear cover clamp. My 120hp is a pain for catching the plug leads unless you put the rear on first then lower the front. If you are not in a built up area try running the boat in the dark on muffs and you will probably be able to see the sparks jumping on the outside of the leads or plug boot

I agree. Very easy to nick a plug boot or dislodge a wire with those dang latches. I got po'd while back & tried to remove the port side latch. Cuz it was the one caused the most problems. Naturally the bolts broke off in the cowl, and now the latch doesn't work at all ...

But that's okay. I figger two outa three ain't bad ...
