1984 Johnson 115 replacing rings.

Got my Power Head all apart finally. Going to take it to a shop to be cleaned, and honed as well as measure the holes and remove 2 broken bolts I cant get out.

I never honed before, I take it its recommended at this stage-But does it take material off? Should it look cross-hatched when Done. The holes are smooth/clean and non-marked now and look great--but are extremely smooth. Is that whats called Glazed? Should I even hone?

Sorry, lots of questions on Honing. I'm sure more to come on my 1st rebuild(learning, and having fun).

thanks

You can run a flexable hone through the cylinders to break up the slickness and also find any low spots or problems. Be sure to measure the cylinder at the top, center and bottom. If there is much difference in the three readings, bore the cylinders and start with straight holes. After honing, take some emery cloth and round the edges of the intake and exhaust ports so there is no chance of hanging a ring.

Thanks for the tips, especially on the ports. Is honing something I can do/should do? What type of tool is recommended? And last question--what should it look like after its done?

Big thanks

A flex or ball hone will actually hide imperfection in cylinder and are designed as a deglaze or finishing hone. Only a rigid hone(not spring type) will show the high/low/out of round areas in cylinders.

A ball hone will wear out before you can take more than a .001 out of cylinders. Measure the cylinders at top, middle and bottom and if more than .003 out of round it needs boring(see diagram below) and after boring the shop should hone and crosshatch should look like below. When I bore a cylinder I usually bore it .0005 undersize and use my Sunnen hone to bring it out to final spec's and crosshatch.
