V4 questions? Early - late model.

What were the changes or differences between the different era V4 motors, primarily the early 70's, mid 70's and then the early 80's motors?

What parts interchange? Are the mid sections or lower units the same.
Were these all very different motors when it comes to parts or were they just minor changes?

I have been looking for a good used motor for my one boat, but keep finding various different years, all of which are from different eras. Was there a point where the main design changed?
My main concern is with the tilt and trim and bracket styles. I have plenty of later styel tilt/trim units and brackets, but all those motors are blown up. I have several mid 70's motors that run fine yet have no tilt or trim. I also have a near new 1970 power head that needs a home as well, but from what I am told it's of no use on the later motors?
Did anyone ever make a parts interchange book for outboards as they do for automotive parts?

Well there were some major changes. For one thing they went from Hydro-Electric shift to Power Shift, to Mechanical shift. They also went from hang-on PTT to the type that is built in between the brackets. I am sure there are other changes, but these two come to mind.

The older V4 engines were electric shift lower units through 1972. The powerhead mounting changed in 1978, this included the gearcase shift mechanism under the bottom carb, the transom brackets and trim system, along with the ignition system. You can check and compare all of the Bombardier parts from 1968 on by viewing their parts website: epc.brp.com.

Partial list of differences

edit: (early mechanical shift V4s 1958 - 1968)

Electric shift V4s 1962 - 1968
Hydro Electric shift V4s 1969 - 1972
Hydro mechanical shift V4s 1973 - 1976 135hp/1973 - 1977 115 and 85hp
unassisted Mechanical shift V4s 1977 140hp/ all V4s 1978 till present.

1969 Major changes in overall design of outboard
1973 new tilt tube location also allowed attachment of steering cable to engine instead of boat
1974 saw bearing and conrod changes
1977 140 intoduced a new midsection, bracket and trim system, in 78 all V4s got these.

So I take it that pretty much no parts would interchange between the 1970 and 1976 motors?
I have had the newer all mechanical shift motors completely apart, but never the early ones. How did the Hydro Mechanical motors shift? Were they just as reliable as a full mechanical?
Is there any one group to completely avoid? I have what looks like may be a new take off 1970 era 115 power head, what I was wondering is whether or not I could use the block on a newer motor? (Circa 1975 or 1976 mid and lower). I have one that ate a block and piston and am trying to avoid a costly new block.
For as many of these motors as they supposedly made, they sure seem few and far between when it comes to finding one in running shape. There seems to be a pretty much endless supply of 70 hp three cylinders though.

I sure couldn't find a 70 when I was looking a couple years ago. Oh, and the 1967 60 horse V4 had a full mechanical shift lower.
