Hi All,

I have an 89 Johnson 225 V6 that is having idle problems. I start it using the manual override on the primer solenoid (red lever perpendicular to the body of the solenoid) and it will idle ok, but it spits some un-burned fuel out the exhaust. When I move the red lever to the run position (parallel with the body of the solenoid) the motor coughs and chokes out. I'm not sure if it is a stuck reed or something else. I just rebuilt the fuel side of the VRO (not using the oil side, pre-mix in tank @ 50-1), and that is pumping well. Carbs were taken off over the winter and cleaned/rebuilt, new fuel lines from the tank to the carbs. Any ideas?

88-91 has the crappest carbs for idle, unburnt fuel is ignition, compression or reed problems. I have seen several of the rubber coated reed block craked and peel on the se due to ethanol fuel.

Could this also be a timing issue? i.e. the spark advance set wrong (set at WOT timing at idle)?
