Anyone know if there will be any issues with taking rebuilt carbs from an '84 evinrude 235 and using them on an '81 Evinrude 235 ?

Re: V6 Cross flow carb swap

There were three types of 235 carbs in 84. The base 235 carbs (.063 mains,) the early production 235S carbs (.065 mains) and the late 235S carbs (.081 mains.) They all will bolt on and will run. To get any of them really dialed in, you may have to do some minor rejetting. Do you know which of these 84 carbs you have? Some of the early 1981 engines (the H models) came with the high compression 638/639 heads. You would want to flow extra fuel if you are running those heads on your block. You will have to modify your primer solenoid lines somewhat, in order to feed the brass hose barbs on the top of each of the 3 carbs, since your 81 fed the bypass covers.

Re: V6 Cross flow carb swap

Thanks for the reply emdsapmgr, ok the found some numbers on the body and tags, the '84 E235STLCRC :

# 1 Carb body # 328815* (tag# 395465, 235 SP, 12CJMX)
# 2 Carb body # 328815* (tag# 395464, 235 SP, 9AJMX)
# 3 Carb body # 328815* (tag# 395465, 235 SP, 12CJMX)

On the '81 E235TRXCIB :

# 1 Carb body # 325524 B (No tag)
# 2 Carb body # 325524 (No suffix or tag)
# 3 Carb body # 325524 B (No tag)

Not sure what heads are on the '81 not sure if your able to decipher by the head part #'s:

Heads on the '84 # 328327
Heads on the "81 # 327124

As far as the primer nipples on the bypass covers can I just manifold the primers together and use the Carb primers without any issues ?

Your help is greatly appreciated !

Re: V6 Cross flow carb swap

It's hard to tell just what carbs you have from the numbers you provide. It's unusual for the factory carb numbers to relate to their actual exploded parts diagrams. The big thing is to compare the main jets with your ones from the 81. Looks like the basic 84 carbs are a nearly perfect match for your 81. Both may have .063 mains. They will both be 1 3/8" throats, so will flow the same amount of air. Appears that the heads on our engine are not the high compression ones-so you should be ok with your swap and will probably not have to do any re-jetting. I'd probably cap the old fuel primer hose barbs in the bypass covers. I wouldn't manifold them together. Your 81 also has the recirc system, which may be plumbed to the bypass covers. You might find it easier to just swap the 84 bypass covers to the 81 to eliminate the fuel primer hose barb issue.
