wanted to know if any of you has had any experence with the 8 bolts either loosining or shearing off and allowing the endcap to lift and rotate.in this case enough to let the stator get into the flywheel and generally make a mess out of everything....someone must have knew because the replacement bolts from omc of course are 8 dollars each...no u read that right,8 dollars x 8.thought maybe it was one of those dirty little secrets the tech people didnt speak of except at the annual christmas party....

The bolts were installed w/o Loctite by the factory. If the bearing cap hasn't destroyed the crankcase, install new bolts using Loctite ... see the shop manual.

The threads in the block must be clean and dry, except for loc-tite. The bolts only break after they become loose and the bearing housing trys to turn. You could probley buy an aircraft certified bolt for 8.00. The bolt inspection should be on maintenance check list. I see this as a quality control problem.

It was a factory screw up that affected a bunch of V6 motors in that year. Motors were built w/o Loctite, when they should have had it. It's not a normal maint. thing. You should never have to tighten the bearing head screws.
