I own a 1977 Evinrude 175 model# 175749S that is a 20" shaft, that I want to convert into a 25" motor. I know a guy that has a 86 225 that has a blown powerhead. If I take everything below the powerhead adapter, will it work on my motor?

Re: V6 part compatibility

You SHOULD be ok. My info shows that 1986 was the last year for the 2.5l and 2.6l crossflow blocks in the 225 or 235hp. 1987 they came out with the 2.7l looper 225hp. The V6 crossflow remained as the 150hp and 175hp (just a detuned 235hp). Please remember, I'm only as correct as the info available to me. ;)

Re: V6 part compatibility

Well I must have been bleary eyed at the time, but after looking at some more info it seems it may not work. The '86 is a 2.7l (165ci) engine. I'm not sure if it's a looper or crossflow. If the '86 IS a looper, it won't work. Your 175 is 149ci and is a crossflow. Maybe some one else can be a little more sure on this as I'm now confused (not hard to do for me) on this one. Well did some more searching and the '86 225 is a looper and won't swap with the '77 175. Sorry. :(

I too, must have been on something, because it is an '86 175 not a 225, he also had some 225 parts and I must have gotten confused. I assume this will fit.

Just for kicks lets see if we understand what you have and want to buy.

You have a 1977 20" 175 flatback V6 crossflow.

You want to buy a 1986 25" bubbleback V6 crossflow.

You then want to install your powerhead on the 25" motor. Right?

If all the above is correct, It will work but its not a direct cross over fit. You will have to use the adaptor plate and inner exhaust for whichever powerhead you will use.

Yes, that's basically it. If I understand you right I will have to use the upper inner exhaust housing from the powerhead and the lower inner exhaust housing from midsection(because of the differnce in length). Do you know if this will work OK?

Re: V6 part compatibility

You need the adaptor plate (what the powerhead sits on) and the exhaust tuner bolted to it. There may be some other minor things that come up but we've done it before.

Of course you need the 25" drive shaft and shift shaft. We assume what you are buying has a gearcase on it so that will work in place of your 20".

Its not a bad job if all the bolts come out easily. An OE service manual is a must.

Good luck!
