I am considering attempting to replace the water pump in my Seadrive myself. Has anyone out there attempted this and how difficult is it to do?

Re: V6 Seadrive Lower Unit

Not to difficult if you have some mechanical ability.Start by removing the bolt that retains the shift shaft under the bottom carb,by putting in reverse can make it easier to get at the bolt ,which is really a threaded pin.Using a 3/8 flexable socket and 1/4 drive long extension makes it easiest. Also wrap the flex knuckle with a piece of tape restricting the flex enough to manuveur.Remove the large mounting bolt 5/8 I recall under the cavitation plate, also remove the trim tab, there is another 9/16 bolt under it,then the remaing 6 mounting 9/16 bolts on the sides of lower unit, you might want to remove the prop ,makes it lighter and easier to handle, aftr all bolts are out, shake, tap pull .whatever it takes to get it to come down. if its been a while, used in salt, might take a bit, once lower is down, you will see the housing of water pump on top of lower, remove the 4 bolts and remove the housing exposing the impeller, impeller has a plastic key,it probably wont lift up easily ,but carefully using slotted screw drivers you can finesse the impeller to slide up.some lube and making sure shaft is clean will help, sometimes tapping the impleller between the blades with a hammer and chisle will losten it also, once impeller is out, check the stainless plate it rides on,id there are any grooves, change the plate, also change the gasket below plate,at this time check your water inlet screen on sides of lower casing, this is the time ti change it if its broke,it pushes up with finesse and new one snaps in place, you also want to check the stainless housing cup for wear, if you have any doubts ,get a water pump kit in lieu of just impeller, br sure oring on housing is ok or change, when installing new impeller, you can put a dab of grease,or glue on the key to keep in place when sliding new impeller on,a lite coat of grease in cup helps to get impeller in when putting housing in place,I like to put 2 phillips screw drivers into the housing bolt holes to help hold housing in place when sliding over impeller, also turning the shaft CLOCKWISE while putting pressure on housing makes installaion easier,as does a helper,I like greasing every bolt i put back, also change the oring at top of driveshaft ,grease splineswell with a waterproof high heat grease, while putting lower back on it may be necessary to havesomeone rotate flywheel if the lower is stuck last couple inches, the shift shaft may be difficult to get lined up,under the cowling pan you may see it and a loooong nose pliers will help, removing the shift cable may ease the installing of shift pin, sounds like alot but its not as long as all bolts come out ok and with seadrives the driveshaft sometimes gets stuck, changing the seadrive impeller is like any other omc v4 or v6 all about same
probs, theres lots of help here, good luck,

What engine do you have? I recently did the waterpumps & t-stats on my 1987 1.6L crossflow Seadrives. The t-stats are do-able but a bitc&.

As best as I can tell it is a 1985 with a 235 powerhead. The power head model is E235TXRL. Tstats seem to be real easy; just pulled them off this morning, at least I hope they were the tstats.
