Hi,

I have an engine alarm that comes on every once in a while. The service engine light comes on and its a constant beep. The temp gauge never goes over 160 and the oil pressure gauge stays between 42-49 range.

This is a 2015 chapparal sunesta 264 with a volvo penta V8-320-C-B. First time it happened i got towed back to the slip and flushed the engine and restarted it and just idled in the slip running off seawater to try to troubleshoot but the alarm never came back on. Then 2 months went by with no problems then suddenly it was back. When it happens its always the same way. Just as i get out of my marina within a minute or so boom alarm comes on. Im using going about 1500-2000 rpm.

I guess my question is does anyone know what other sensors in my particular engine can bring on that alarm besides engineer temp and oil pressure?

Thanks

And what troubleshooting have you done?

Carbed or EFI? If EFI, you need Rinda

Actually i never get the chance to trouble shoot. Whenever it does this i get towerd back to my slip and then when i restart the engine it works fine. Im 99% sure my engine is electronic fuel injection. What is rinda? Sorry i have had this boat for 4 years but not very technical.

A Volvo Penta V8-320-CB is a multiport fuel injected 5.7L V8. Here's a link to a parts listing:

Best way to figure out what's going on is to hook it up to a Rinda scan tool which will tell you what is causing the engine to go into protection mode. Here's a link to Rinda. They also have Diacom software that can be put on a laptop to read codes.

Appreciate it but was hoping there might be some other things to do or try that dont involve buying such a tool.

Isnt there only a certain number of sensors for my engine that can give a constant beep alarm? I was just hoping to at least narrow down the options.

I have yet to find any online information about deciphering Volvo beep codes. Without ECM data, you're just working blind.

If you don't have the engine display, then it is a matter of guessing. The computer will allow you/mechanic the see what is going on.

Did you get towed back to dock because the engine died, or were you just concerned about running it with the CEL and alarm?

Engine never dies i was just too scared to run it with the alarm blaring.

Given that mechanics who will work on VP outdrives are few and far between you need to have a tool to interface to the VP ECM.

I bought a Diacom and a small screen laptop. It's a great product.
