V8 belt size?

Can anyone tell me EXACTLY what size or model number drive belt i need for a 1990 mercruiser 454 7.4l. I cant find it in the manual anywhere. I have had an issue with the belt squeaking at low rpms. Every time i retighten the belt, via pulling the alternator over and retightening it works great for a week or so then loosens up and squeaks again. Im thinking i may have the wrong size (width) belt on. Someone told me the belt should sit at the top of the pulley. I noticed that it is riding about a half inch or so into the pulley.

my 7.4 Mercruiser is a 1996 and has 3 -V-belts- alt-inside--power steering middle--- raw water/fuel pump out iside- if yours is the same I'll see what I can find on mine.

you might make sure they are in alignment- Im goint this evening-

Allignment looks good on all pulleys and belts. I did notice some black powder on the alternator side in the bilge area.

IF your pulleys are rusty, they will wear the sides off the belts and they will end up loose very quickly.
Here is a site where you can look up the OEM part numbers. Most auto parts stores can convert the OEM number into their belts. And don't try to use 96 year part numbers, they are all different, even the block is different.

Merc does not post belt sizes, but if you take the Merc part number to your parts store, they can usually convert it.
