Not sure if this is the right place to post this but here goes anyway.

Has there ever been an i/o type boat (or other) that used a vaccuum advance distributor? If not why not. Just curious, I don't intend to try something out of the ordinary.

DougV>

Simple answer, NO. Vacuum advance is used on cars to improve economy and reduce emissions at idle and low load conditions. Cars coast really easy....boats on the other hand don't and the engine is always under load.

I believe the vacuum advance was not used in the days of the point distributor becaue of the problem of sealing the distributor where the vacuum advance mechanism penetrated the housing. Now the advantages of vacuum advance can be done electronically.

Yes, they did use them. Back in the mid to late 60's Mercruiser used them on the 283 and 327 Chevy V8's. They also had the cap with the little window for adjusting the points....... Just like a car.
That was before the Coast Guard took over the safety aspect of boating.
