buy new dizzy gear, takes 3 minutes to change, and 2 of those are digging tools out of your tool box. you will need a punch to drive out the roll pin and a hammer.
I asked the Mercruiser rep years ago why the marine in line engines had fiber cam gears. He said it made the engines quiter since it was so close to the boater. And as the poster said it was 20 years old.
Cheverolet used fiber cam gears in the passenger cars up to around 1962.

My 165 (1972) has factory aluminium gear on the cam, no fibre (I was the first to open it up in 1987). I also remember reading a parts or service bulletin during my dealership years that GM only supplied ali gears on the cams for the marine engines, never fibre. For the reason, they strip out.
Found a Melling gear by doing a cross reference at the local O’Reillys. It’s perfect! I’ll replace it this weekend and then on to the next issue that will definitely come up.
