I have a 2004 40 hp yamaha and have followed all suggestions and done all necessary checks of fuel system, compression, plugs, fuel pump and have rebuilt carbs. Motor still bogs and cuts out when trying to get out of the hole.

Next, I will try to sync carbs. I have the Yamaha mantenance book and it describes how to sync the carbs. Where can I get a vacuum gage and the right adaptors for the manifold? Anything else I should know before attempting this?

Thanks for the support.

Bob

As an aside... the Yamaha catalogue shows a small ball (like a bearing ball) in the plunger of each carb. I didn't find this ball in the plunger aperatus on any of the three carbs. Has Yamaha changed this design and could the catalogue not have it yet? I'm worried that a previous rebuild might have left these out or somehting.

Have you posted the account of your trials up to here? what kind of prop and boat do you have attached to this beast? I have a 2005 50 hp, and the service manual. Are you talking about the needle valve that is operated by the float?

Yes. I have posted and gotten lots of advice here.
The motor is a 40 hp 2004 4 stroke. It is on a 13 foot whaler. The engine was acting this way when I bought it.

Re: Vacuum Gage /sync carbs help

I bought a $30 vacum guage from the auto pats store and hooked it up to the manifold coming from carb #2, just to see what happen. The needle bounces so much that I can't even read it. I tried all different rpms with no luck.
I then followed the directions in the Yamaha manual to sync, but could not get the needle to quiet down enough to read.

Can anyone help???

You need a guage with a damping valve. The intake pulses make the needle jump back and forth. The valve will smooth out the pulses.
