Valuing Merc 850

I have an oprotunity to purchase a merc 850 with SN 4297724,
Starts easy comes with working trim setup, new wire harness and control cables (needed as I don't have a set for Mercs).

How would I figure out what market is for such a motor? Also what issues should I check for for these mid 70's motors?

The value is hard to estimate, but I guess anything anyone will pay for it, although I would expect no more than $500. If you part it out you could probably get more for it.

The enginer wiring harness was a general problem in these motors.

Interesting he is asking more than 3x that, and looking on ebay it could or could not be an alright price. There other good used motor postings?

A couple of years ago I bought a '93 Merc 135V6 for $1k. it was a good buy I thought. I think that motor is real overpriced.

Did you find that on a listing online or from a dealer that I could call?

It was from a used boat dealer down the street. He is since out of business (went to jail for not paying sales taxes to the state) I just cited that reference to give another data point on price.

I would think you should stick with a newer model motor. Those old inlines were good, but after all this time, lost of stuff can wear out.

I'd think $800-maybe $1k would be fair.
