if you can close the idle screws and not change the engine speed ya need a rebuild by someone who knows what is going on. the Q-jet is about the best most versitale carb ever built. you need to go find the fuel leak on the primary or secondary circuits. the idle air fuel mixture passages are being bypassed and its drawing fuel from someplace its not supposed to.

rodbolt,that is what I was thinking.These carbs came from a marine store outlet.Who rebuilt them,I don't know.<br />Anyway,I did try to set them up as per this: lihttp://www.carburetion.com/mixtureadj.htmnk<br />Don't know what it is saying about step #3,adjust "air screw".Are they talking about the screw on the throttle linkage?<br />If so,I was able to adjust the A/f screws so,didn't hear much of rpm change,but was able to get most of the backfire out when throttling up fast.
