Valve adjustments?

I finally found some time to get the boat put back together last night after repllacing the blown head gasket(1989 Mercrusier 3.0L). I adjusted the valves by finding TDC for each cylinder, removing all lash and tightening down one full turn for both the intake and exhasut valves for that cylinder.

I bolted everything back up and fired it up but I have some rocker noise. Did I do something wrong on the adjustments? What's the best way to go about setting the valve adjustments? I know you can set them with the engine running but what's the proper way to do that? It seems pretty self explanatory but I don't want to take anything for granted.

One a separate note, how do you guys put a drive back on by yourself? Those things are a bear to get aligned and put back on!

NOTE: While the procedure is the same for the 89 model, the 89 is supposed to be set at 1 full turn down from zero lash, not 3/4 as stated in directions above.

For the drive, just set the drive on some blocks that will hold the drive about level, then just slide it forward into place.

Thanks again Don! On the 3.0L engines, what order are the intake and exhaust valves if you are looking from inside the boat to the stern?

You are best off adjusting while the engine is running, this way you know the lifters are pumped up and it wont matter what order you do them. It tends to be more messy but worth it.

Also when you loosen the valve it will sound like 2 tea spoons slaping each other, snug until the noise stops then 1 full turn.

Re: Valve adjustments?

The only problem I see with doing the running method is having to disconnect the fuel line and linkages to get the cover off, then reconnect the fuel line and start it back up.

Another question....in my gasket set, there were some rubber o-rings, are they for the fuel fittings?
