Various stringer questions

So, I'm getting ready to start on the stringers in a day or so, but like to plan my project out a few days in advance.

I have the old stringer mostly in one piece.....it was actually two pieces of play butt joined together to make one long piece. I've done some searching here, but thought I'd ask my specific questions and hope to get some help.

1. What is the best way to join two pieces of ply together to make one long stringer? I've hears scarf (?) joint mentioned. I have no idea what this is.

2. Hoe do I make sure my stringers are level along the length? It seems it might get a little hard especially as the bottom is cut to fit the hull in the bo.

3. Can I bed the stringers in fiberglass putty? I had bought some earlier when I first started this project.

4. Do I coat the stringers first with a layer of resin, before putting them in the boat?

5. Should I use biaxial cloth running the length of the stringer on either side to tab it to the hull? Is this overkill? How many layers of cloth would be necessary?

Thanks

Steve

Re: Various stringer questions

Bad,
See oops thread page 11 show a great method of finding the hull curve. He also shows a scarf joint for plywood. Now his stringers are way bigger than ours but the principle is the same. cut a plywood stringer slightly bigger than what you think the final height will be. Do the suspended trick (I use a 2x2 across the upper hull and suspend using clamps). After the curve is cut, dry fit and fix any spots that are off. once you know the deck height cut the stringer down on a table saw.
As far as the joint I am using biscut joints with the 8 ft section toward the stern these are almost parallel to the deck and the forward pieces have most of the curve. Once you do one it should have a matching stringer on the other side. The trick to getting it right is make them bigger than the final height so you can cut them down for the final deck height.
