Re: Various stringer replacement issues?

How much should hulls flex underway? How much strength/stiffness do stringers give to the hull?

Ayuh,... ALL the strength, 'n stiffness comes from the Stringers, 'n bulkheads...

It shouldn't be Flexing...

Probably not a big issue, just looking for previous experience.

WOW!!! Uniberp, You REALLY need to do some reading about Stringer and Transom replacement and overall boat construction. You are WAY off base with your statements and way of thinking. This attitude will probably not encourage the guys on here with EXPERIENCE to GIVE it to you!!!!

Gee thanks. The boat has been used regularly for skiing and recreational use with a totally rotten floor for at least 5 years. So I guess it was just faith that was keeping it afloat.

If stringers (in this boat) did more than provide a flat floor, you'd think they would have been built with something other than cheap ply coated with one layer of glass mat.

All boats flex. all materials flex. Some less than others.

uniberp, if I recall your original post correctly, it involved a Sea Ray Seville 18.5'. There are several restores of that same boat going on right now (LR, Tink, and Stampeder, to name a few). Just search the forum and you should get all the info you need.

I don't know even a fraction of what these guys do, but I didn't see see much structural integrity in the original build of the stringers in my 86 Ray. Mine were only glassed well on one side, with only mat on the other. ...although they were built much stronger back by the engine.
