i had to take the electric motor off of this tilt and trim unit because it wasn't working, after i fixed the motor, i drained and filled the thing with tractor hydraulic fluid, and after i looked around, i think i needed to use automatic transmission fluid, is this correct? ... did i possibly mess anything up putting hydraulic fluid in it?

also, it raises up and down fine, but in the up position it slowly goes down, like within 3 - 4 minutes maybe ... i don't see any fluid leaking anywhere or anything.

any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

basicly i think that hydraulic fluid, atf, and even power streering fluid is all the same and could be used with out problem, but im sure johnson makes spefic hydraulic fluid for it. but im no expert hang on and see what one of the experts say.

its probbaly full of air and just needs bleeded, my tilt and trim does the same thing jsut takes mine less time. so ill watch and see what they come up with

My manual for my 87 50HP says to use OMC Tilt&trim fluid, and my Sealoc manual says OMC or Dexron II (in bold letters-they mean what they say) Tractor hydraulic fluid might not have the right stuff in it. Go with the Dexron II.

To bleed it, fill with Dexron II, replace the plug, and cycle the motor up and down 5 times, then check fluid level. Fill as needed and repeat the cycling.

thanks for the info guys, i drained it real good, filled it with dexron III which on the back of the bottle said it was suitable for dexron II systems, i've filled it about 6 times total so far and the motor doesn't seem to be dropping down anymore, i'm gonna let the electric motor cool off for a while and do it a few more times and continue filling to see if i can get it 100% full

Make sure that you put the charger on the battery. Will work better and the starter will not draw more than the battery has left to give.

My OMC manual says to make sure the battery is fully charged before you start.
