Good Evening!
I recently purchased a Pontoon from a friend. He sold it for Cheap, because the Marina he used for service could not get the engine(1990 70HP evinrude) to run.
I have a College education in Diesel Technology. I know my way around an engine. I just need some help with some details specific to this engine.
The First problem encountered was an ignition problem. The spark would cut out from time to time. A day on the lake, an oscilloscope, & We determined that the Power pack was faulty. New Pack, problems solved. Well, Sort of. Now It is running out of fuel in the Carbs. let it run at 1K Rpms for a couple of minutes, then you get full power for about 10 seconds, until the top carb runs out of fuel, then it falls on its face. If somebody pumps the primer bulb, it runs great. But Wait, maybe the fuel filter is Dirty. In the process of replacing the fuel filter, I Manage to Break the Bottom off of the fuel Pump, Where the pulse line attaches. Oops.
So, a new pump would cost me around $300. I Certainly do not want to spend $300 on this thing, at least until I am sure this engine is a good one.
Also, After reading the FAQ's, I really want to do away with the VRO system, for premixing. It is simply my preference to mix my own oil/gas.
So, now for the questions. What fuel pump can I use, in place of the VRO pump, that is Cheap? I have considered an electric pump, but it has it's own set of issues. I would like to find a simple, Cheap($40-$60) "Pulse" pump to try.
Any recommendations? Part Numbers? Will I still need a pulse limiter? If not, What do I need to hook up the pulse line? Will I need to fab up a bracket to hold the pump?
Thanks in Advance for any insight. Pat.
