Good Evening!

I recently purchased a Pontoon from a friend. He sold it for Cheap, because the Marina he used for service could not get the engine(1990 70HP evinrude) to run.

I have a College education in Diesel Technology. I know my way around an engine. I just need some help with some details specific to this engine.

The First problem encountered was an ignition problem. The spark would cut out from time to time. A day on the lake, an oscilloscope, & We determined that the Power pack was faulty. New Pack, problems solved. Well, Sort of. Now It is running out of fuel in the Carbs. let it run at 1K Rpms for a couple of minutes, then you get full power for about 10 seconds, until the top carb runs out of fuel, then it falls on its face. If somebody pumps the primer bulb, it runs great. But Wait, maybe the fuel filter is Dirty. In the process of replacing the fuel filter, I Manage to Break the Bottom off of the fuel Pump, Where the pulse line attaches. Oops.

So, a new pump would cost me around $300. I Certainly do not want to spend $300 on this thing, at least until I am sure this engine is a good one.

Also, After reading the FAQ's, I really want to do away with the VRO system, for premixing. It is simply my preference to mix my own oil/gas.

So, now for the questions. What fuel pump can I use, in place of the VRO pump, that is Cheap? I have considered an electric pump, but it has it's own set of issues. I would like to find a simple, Cheap($40-$60) "Pulse" pump to try.

Any recommendations? Part Numbers? Will I still need a pulse limiter? If not, What do I need to hook up the pulse line? Will I need to fab up a bracket to hold the pump?

Thanks in Advance for any insight. Pat.

You could probably use a conventional OMC fuel pump. I think the last one on the 70HP was 1984, but the setup may still be there on your engine. Check the Pump and manifold connections on your engine against the 1984 on the BRP parts manuals site.

the fuel pump on the 48 spl and 88 spl is part #433387, these are the 50 hp and 90 hp engines without the vro pump, in other words if evinrude had a line of 70ph premixed engines they would be 68 spl.

IBoats offers a complete pump that replaces part #433387. It appears to mount to the crankcase with a gasket. (going by picture only) Does it need to mount to the crankcase somewhere for it's pressure pulses, or can I Run a hose to it, similar to the VRO pump? IF mounted to the crankcase, do I have a mounting location to hook it to? If so, I cannot find it! Also, If I use that one, do I still use the pulse limiter, or just an open fitting?

Thanks for your help, Pat

The following link has pictures midway through the thread of rickdb1boat's conversion of a 70HP from VRO to Conventional pump. If you start a new thread, or send a pm, maybe he would share the information with you.

I used pump #438557. You will not need the pulse limiter. You will need a straight through fitting available at any hardware store (Brass). A small homemade bracket does fine. Here's one on Ebay:
